Yangsan Campus to Open Multipurpose Sports Grounds
PNU’s Yangsan Campus will open a large multipurpose sports field by late 2026, offering new athletic facilities for students and local residents.
A large-scale multipurpose athletic field will be constructed at Pusan National University (PNU)’s Yangsan Campus. The estimated completion target is the second half of 2026.
According to PNU’s Division of Campus Planning and the Division of Facilities Management on September 5th, PNU will invest approximately 6.6 billion won in total project costs to build a “multipurpose athletic field (sports field)” at the Yangsan Campus. The field, to be built between the Kyung-Am Engineering Building and Cheongun-ro, will cover approximately 29,583m², an area equivalent to roughly four standard soccer fields combined. This project, part of the Yangsan Campus Master Plan established in 2022, was initiated to address the chronic shortage of athletic facilities.
Construction will proceed in two phases. First, an artificial turf soccer field and a four-lane track were completed in early 2025 using 2 billion won in national funds. The completion inspection for Phase 1 concluded on August 28th, 2025. Phase 2, costing approximately 4.6 billion won, will commence in March 2026. This phase involves installing auxiliary facilities such as tennis courts, lighting towers, restrooms, and shower rooms by the second half of 2026. The budget for this phase is expected to be secured by year-end. The Campus Planning Team of the Division of Campus Planning stated, “It was reflected as a special requirement budget in the government’s budget proposal in August 2025 and it is pending passage by the National Assembly in December 2025.”
Until now, the Yangsan Campus has lacked a large athletic field unlike other campuses, causing significant inconvenience for its members. While the Yangsan Campus originally had two futsal courts, one tennis court, and one athletic field, it lacked an artificial turf field comparable to the Busan campus’s large athletic field, making it difficult to meet student demand. The Yangsan Campus Administration Office stated, “Without a large athletic field, we had to rent external spaces every time we held a sports festival,” adding, “There were many student requests to expand the facilities.” PNU Student Yang Hong-Woon (Dept. of Biomedical Convergence Engineering, 21) also said, “The disappointing point is the existing futsal courts, tennis courts, and basketball courts were small, so we could only engage in small-scale activities.”
PNU plans to open the newly constructed field not only to its members but also to nearby residents. The Division of Facilities Management at PNU stated, “We expect that opening it to Yangsan citizens will further develop PNU as an institution that actively engages with the local community.” However, caution is advised regarding facility use until its completion in the latter half of 2026. PNU will restrict access to parts of the sports field to ensure safety during construction. Convenience facilities such as restrooms will be available in the nearby Kyung-Am Engineering Building.
