On April 25th, an opening ceremony for “Saebyeokddeul” was held on the newly established grass square in front of the UM. Saebyeokddeul is the new name given to the green space extending from Jangseung-Teo to the UM. This initiative stems from the campus master plan by Cha Jeong-In, the former PNU President, which aims to green the campus core. Key officials of PNU attended the opening ceremony and toured the UM’s exterior and Saebyeokddeul.

Approximately 6.55 billion won has been invested in the project to develop the surrounding environment. Starting last year, the project includes seismic retrofitting and facility improvements for the Annex A and B buildings of the UM, the demolition of the Natural Science Building, and the construction of Saebyeokddeul and the central campus park. Interior construction of the UM is still ongoing. The area where the new lawn now exists in front of the UM is the former site of the Natural Science Building. Previously, PNU announced that it would create a pedestrian-friendly campus by arranging walkways along with the square (reported by “Channel PNU” on March 28th, 2024).

The existing annex of the UM has been renovated and renamed “Munchangjae.” Previously used as storage for the museum, the annex is now expected to host various events, exhibitions, and concerts. Inside Munchangjae, the spaces have been named after key figures who contributed to PNU’s founding and democratization: Yoon In-Gu Hall, Richard Whitcomb Hall, and Yosan Hall.

In front of the UM, a new stone wall has been constructed to enhance connectivity with Saebyeokddeul. At the opening ceremony, Cha said, “The museum being prominently displayed signifies the restoration of PNU’s founding-era building. I look forward to hosting concerts, new faculty appointment ceremonies, and even weddings against the backdrop of this beautiful museum.”

Meanwhile, on the first floor of the Main Administration Building, the “PNU History Hall” was temporarily opened to document the 78-year history of PNU. This space, remodeled from the administrative office, aims to organize and present PNU’s history. The hall is scheduled to be fully opened in July.
